Deloris June Herrick age 92, better known as “Dee”, passed away on Independence Day, July 4, 2020 at her Madera home surrounded by her loving family. Dee was born in Pierpoint, South Dakota to Howard and Elizabeth Torgeson Townsend and raised along with her siblings, Anna Lou, Russell, Elaine, Norman, and Velma. Dee later relocated to California and settled in Madera in 1954 where she remained until her passing. She was a retired teacher and homemaker. In the Madera Community, Dee was a member of the Madera United Methodist Church and was an active member of P.E.O. Chapter VO in Madera. In her leisure time, Dee enjoyed playing bridge.

Dee met Robert “Bob” Herrick while teaching at the same elementary school in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, who had returned from his service in the Navy in World War II. They were married in 1954 and were married for 61 years until his passing in 2015. They were said to have been inseparable, sharing their love for education, he being an Assistant Superintendent of the Madera Unified School District, and she a teacher.

In addition to her beloved husband, “Bob” Dee was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Elaine Herr, Russell Townsend, Anna Lou Auen and Norman Townsend and daughter-in-law Marian Herrick.

She is survived by her children, Jim Herrick and his wife Janet of Holland, MI, Bob Herrick and his wife Karen of Clovis, CA, Mike Herrick and his wife Anna Marie of Fresno, Connie Kampschmidt and her husband John of Madera, and Karen Potkey and her husband Gene all of Madera, Dee is the sister of Velma Pibal of Minnesota, and is the beloved grandmother of 17 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

A service for Dee will be on Thursday, July 16, 2020 at 10 AM in the Arbor area of Arbor Vitae Cemetery in Madera where she will be interred with her husband Bob.

Remembrances in Dee’s memory suggested be sent to the American Cancer Society.
