Thomas Tatsuichi Inami of Madera, CA, passed away on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at the age of 93. Thomas was born on June 6, 1928, in Madera, CA, to Shizuichi George Inami and Kohina Okitsu Inami. Due to World War II, the family was removed from the west coast and incarcerated in Jerome, AR in 1942. His family was allowed to return to Madera in 1945. Thus, he was able to graduate from high school with his Madera classmates in 1946. He graduated from UC Berkeley with a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering in 1953. While at Cal, he voluntarily entered into the Army ROTC. Thomas was called to active duty shortly after receiving his master's degree, and he served in the US Army during the Korean War, earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He returned to Madera to help his family with the operation of Washington Market. He continued in the reserves of the US Army, rising to the rank of Major. Washington Market was destroyed by fire in 1987. Thomas then spent over 20 years on the Madera County Road Department's survey team before retiring. During his retirement, Thomas enjoyed repairing items, curing olives, and drying persimmons. Thomas moved to Cedar Creek Senior Living in Madera, CA on October 17, 2013, until his passing on January 26, 2022. Thomas was a proud life member of the Madera Veterans of Foreign War Post #1981 and a life member of the Tau Beta Pi Association (TBP) which is the oldest engineering honor society in the USA.
Thomas was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank Inami and Joe Inami, and his sisters, Lillian Takayama, Mabel Watanabe, and Lucille Markovich. Thomas is survived by his sister, May Takata, five nephews and eleven nieces, as well as three cherished friends. A Buddhist Memorial Service will be held at the Madera Veterans of Foreign War Post #1981, 2026 N. Granada Dr., Madera, CA 93637, on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. Masks required.
