Silvina Martins, aged 97 and a resident of Madera, CA, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Monday, December 27, 2021. Silvina was born on November 24, 1924 in Canedo, Portugal to Domingos Martins and Ana Teixeira. She later worked in the family farming business and learned the arts of garment-making and cooking. She emigrated from Portugal in 1968 with her husband and children to settle in Connecticut. As a hardworking immigrant, she held various jobs and eventually retired from the Berol Corporation in 1986, after 16 years of service. She was active in her church community in Danbury, participated in philanthropic causes and charities, and traveled the world – especially visiting her family in Portugal. After moving to Madera, she enjoyed her later years tending to her rose gardens and spending time with family.
She is survived by her loving husband of 73 years, Sebastiao; sister Florinda Pereira of Espinho, Portugal; daughters, Aldina Rodrigues of Madera, CA and Maria Phillips and her husband Michael of Glendale, AZ; grandchildren Elizabeth Carlson, Bianca DePina, Cristina Timms and Taylor Phillips; and great-grandchildren Alysia, Amaya, Scarlet and Greyson. She was preceded in death by her young son Domingos; brothers Antonio, Jose Maria, Alvaro, Anibal, and Domingos; and son-in-law Jose Rodrigues.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin with a recitation of the Rosary on Thursday, January 6, 2022, 11:15 a.m. at St. Joachim Catholic Church in Madera. Interment will follow the Mass at Arbor Vitae Cemetery in Madera.
