Tribute

Richard E. Hughes, more affectionately known as Ric, was born April 8, 1946 in Torrance, CA to Dorothy and Richard Hughes. He passed away on April 15, 2019 at the age of 73 in Madera.

After graduating high school in 1964, Ric attended Orange Coast College before going into the Navy in November of 1965. Ric was released from the Navy with an honorable discharge in 1969 after an injury in Vietnam.

Ric met his wife Angela in the summer of 1969. The day he met her he went home to tell his mother that he had met the woman that he was going to marry. They were married October 11, 1969 and 9 months and 12 days later his only child Michael was born. Ric worked construction most of his life except for a few years with McDonald Douglas where he worked on the Skylab project. His job with McDonald Douglas was expeditor. He used to say that his job description should be professional bitcher. It was Ric’s responsibility, to keep production going; making sure, everything arrived on time, and at 6’4”, he was an imposing man who got the job done. He moved his family to Nevada in 1977 mainly because he loved the outdoors and he wanted a smaller community to raise his son in. He still worked in construction, as well as working for the Carson Valley Inn, a casino, where he did maintenance as well as building their Bocce ball court. From there he went to Dal-tile, working with his son and retiring from there after over a decade when they closed the store during the recession. In 2010, he and his wife moved back to the Madera area to be closer to her mother Mary.

Ric loved fishing, hunting and going to garage sales in a never-ending quest to find that special tool or that amazing Sci-Fi novel that he just had to have. He enjoyed being able to participate in the Knights of Columbus once again when he moved back where he served in the Fourth Degree as Navigator. In the last year one of his greatest joys was enjoying a houseboat with his wife and brother in law Tom and watching his two puppies grow up. He loved his Mollie and Gus and spent many hours with Angela just watching them play and giving and receiving uncomplicated love from them. Ric will be greatly missed.

Both parents, his stepfather Edward Rudan and his sister Colleen preceded him in death.

Ric is survived by his wife Angela, his son Michael Hughes and daughter-in-law Kathie, his grandsons, Daniel and Brandon as well as his sister Sharon Kayser, and her two daughters Jennifer and Kristen.
