John Madison Matousek passed away suddenly on January 1, 2019 in Madera California. John was born on March 23, 1955 and raised in Pismo Beach, California. He was the eldest of four children.
As a child, John enjoyed all sports and outdoor activities. He spent many summers camping or enjoying time at the family cabin at Lake Nacimiento. One of his most cherished memories was the time his Dad took the three boys through the Grand Canyon on a rubber raft.
John graduated from Arroyo Grande High School in 1973 where he served as his senior class president and was a lifetime member of CSA. He was active in sports, receiving letters in both football and basketball. After high school graduation John spent the summer traveling the US with his good friend Bob Reed. He spoke often about the great adventure they had. Upon return, John attended UC Davis, obtaining a BS in Food Science. He spent the next 40 years working various positions in local wineries in Fresno and Madera including Heublein, Canandaigua Wines, Gallo and was currently working for Golden Valley Wines. He loved the wine industry and truly valued all of the friendships he made.
John married Sheila, the love of his life, on July 23, 1983. They met on a blind date set up by mutual friends and hit it off immediately. Together they raised their 2 children in Madera. John adored his family and participated in all of their school and social activities. Of particular note was his involvement in Camp Fire where he served on the board of directors and took his children and granddaughter to camp each summer. John always looked forward to the camp trips where he would cook, tell stories, and carve the annual totem pole.
John loved sports, playing them in his youth and watching them as he grew older. He helped coach various sports including his son’s roller hockey team. Weekend golf at the country club or playing pick-up basketball always brought him joy. He loved his yearly golf outings to Utah with his Dad and two brothers. He also took great pride in his son Jared’s accomplishments on the volleyball court. John was a long time Fresno State football season ticket holder and an avid fan of the LA Dodgers and Golden State Warriors.
As the children left home, John spent his free time working around the house, socializing with friends and family, and traveling. John’s life reached deeply into his community and he will be fondly remembered by the many whose lives he touched.
John is survived by his wife of 35 years Sheila Mathis Matousek; children Brittany Sorum (Doug) of Lompoc, California; Jared Matousek (Mariel) of Clovis, California and three loving grandchildren Amber Matousek, Austin Matousek, and Aiden Sorum. He will also be missed by his siblings Dori Woeste (Joe), Joe Matousek (Chelise), and Tom Matousek (Diana).
He is preceded in death by his parents William Joseph Matousek and Elleanor Tuttle Matousek.
