Jessie Bernice Hench was born on September 17, 1928 in Greeley County, Nebraska to Peter Henry and Elsie Marinda Lund and passed away on January 14, 2023 at the age of 94.


Jessie and her family moved from St. Paul, Nebraska to Glendale, CA where she attended and graduated from Hoover High in Glendale in June 1945. She met and married Milton Eugene Hench in Glendale, CA on February 26, 1949. The two of them settled in San Fernando, CA where they had their 3 children; Bryan, Karen and Alan. They later moved their family to Madera in the late 1950’s, which had been her home for the last 62 years.


Jessie retired from Madera County Social Services as a Staff Service Manager in December of 1990. She was a member of the VFW, Auxiliary Post 1981 for 45 ½ years which she held several offices. She also volunteered for Madera Community Hospital for over 20 years.


Jessie is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Milton of 57 years, her beloved son Bryan, sisters Alice Rubeck and Irene Baumann. She is survived by her younger sister Margaret Enochs, her daughter Karen Pottratz and husband Steve, son Alan Hench and wife Karen. Her grandchildren Katie Santiago and husband Jose, Andrea Hench and Steven Edmonston. Great grandchildren, Brilynn, Gabriel, Bryan, Wyatt and Uriah, along with numerous nieces and nephews.


The family thanks the wonderful staff at Cedar Creek Senior Living for their amazing love and care. Additionally to Fresno Hospice, much gratitude for their care and compassion during her final weeks.


Graveside services will be held at Arbor Vitae Cemetery on January 23, 2023 at 1pm.


In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to VFW Auxiliary Post 1981 or Fresno Hospice.
