Tribute

On Monday, December 14, 2020, Helen Arlene Houston Brown, devoted follower of Jesus Christ, went home to be with the Lord at the age of 102. Less than 3 weeks before her 103rd birthday.

Helen was born on January 6, 1918 in Kewanee, Ill. to Karl and Viola Showers. She was the youngest of 7, with 2 sisters and 4 brothers. She married Samuel Owen Houston on August 16, 1937. Helen and Sam had two children, Patrica and Samuel Jr. The family moved to California from Illinois in 1952. Helen and Sam ended up retiring to Madera, California in 1977. After 53 years of marriage, Sam, the love of her life, passed away. Helen married Forrest Brown October 25, 1994, who was her faithful companion until his passing.

Helen held many jobs over her years, including nursing at Kewanee Public Hospital for 10 years, before retiring at age 57. She was involved with the Woman's Improvement Club for over 29 years, the Emblem Club for 16 years, was a hospital volunteer for over 13 years, and loved helping with the Madera Rescue Mission. Helen was a beloved longtime member of First Christian Church, where she attended Sunday school classes and weekly bible studies.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents Karl and Viola, her 6 siblings, her husband Sam Houston Sr., and her second husband Forest Brown. She is survived by her daughter Pat Gilson and husband Frank of Madera, son Sam Houston Jr. and wife Patti of Auburn, Ca., her favorite ex son-in-law Art Davidson Jr. of Simi Valley, Ca., grandchildren Arthur Davidson III and wife Coleen, Lance Davidson and wife Monica, Kurt Davidson and wife Lisa, Sam Houston III and wife Nicole, Amy Houston - Baldisamo and husband Larry, Joel Houston and wife Erica, and a legacy of 19 great grandchildren, 32 great-great grandchildren and counting.

Everyone who knew Helen, knew of her zeal for Jesus. She was spunky, a bit sassy, and until recently, was hard to catch at home, always at some function or lunch with friends. Helen gave all glory to God and her salvation in Him, as the reason for her long and meaningful life. She will be spending her 103rd birthday dancing in His presence.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, January 6, 2021, 2:00 pm at Arbor Vitae Cemetery.
