Gene Peabody

Tribute

It is with great sadness that the family of Eugene Peabody announces his passing on Thursday, April 30, 2020, at the age of 89. Eugene Peabody was born February 14, 1931 in Fresno California to Jack Peabody and Bernice Beatty. He lived in Fresno until High School then moved with his family to Merced and attended Merced High until 1947 when he joined the Air force at age 17. He was a radio operator during the Korean Conflict. After serving in the Air force, he attended college at Humboldt State and Graduated with a degree in Wildlife Biology.

He began his career with the California State Department of Fish and Game as a Wildlife Biologist. In May of 1964, he married Nancy Stewart of Merced California. Gene and Nancy settled in Madera in 1966. They have two children David Peabody and Janice Copland. In 1994, Gene retired from the California State Department of Fish and Game.

Throughout his life he loved fishing and hunting and went as often as possible. He also enjoyed antiquing, going to swap meets and yard sales as well as auctions. As a hobby, he worked on antique clocks and watches.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Nancy, his children David Peabody, Janice and John Copland, and his two grandchildren Andrew Copland and Kimberly Copland. Also survived by his brother John Peabody and his wife Judy. He will be forever missed by all who knew him.
