Daniel Thornton, 90, went to heaven on Wednesday, January 23, 2020, after living a Wonderful healthy life on this earth with his beloved wife Joane. He has been healed and made whole again by his Heavenly Father. Daniel was born April 3, 1929 in George West, Texas to Doss Younger Thornton and Maggie Sterling Thornton. He was married to Josephine Ann (Joane) Cole on October 28, 1951. He had two sons Mark Randall Thornton and Paul Eric Thornton.
Daniel graduated from Madera High School in 1947.
Daniel served 2 terms in the United States Air Force from 1947 to 1954. Proudly serving in Korea in 1950’s with the 18th Fighter Wing. He was a devoted VFW Commander with California Post 8743. Daniel was very patriotic wearing his Korea War Veterans Hat and Flying his United States Flag outside his home always!
He was a skilled and dedicated Field appraiser for 26 years with Madeira County and then the United States Housing and Urban Development. He enjoyed square dancing, country music, camping with family, activities with his sons, and keeping Track of Friends and Family. Daniel loved telling stories about his life’s adventures, esp. about Korea War and P51 mustangs. He had a contagious smile and loved to laugh.
Daniel loved his family and leaves behind to treasure his memories his wife Joane Thornton, son Mark Thornton and wife Jane, grandchildren Travis Thornton, Tera (Joel) Fry, Jesa Herman, & Amanda (Craig) Dennis; Great Grandchildren Noah and Mara Thornton, Joel Jr and Faith Fry, and Jase Dennis. All of who loved him beyond words! Daniel was also greatly loved by his Sister Mary Atkinson, Sister in Law Leota Brewer, Brother in law Tom Zerung, Daughter in law Linda Thornton and many nephews & nieces and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, one sister, Grandson in law Jeremy Herman, and Beloved youngest Son Paul Thornton.
The family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Crossing for taking exceptional care of him and the entire family during his final days.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2020 from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at Jay Chapel, Madeira, CA.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2020 at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella, CA.
