Carl Cereghino, 91, passed away peacefully at his home on April 19, 2021. Carl was a loving, caring, and kind father and Nonno.
He was born on May 28, 1929 in Madera, CA to Antonio Cereghino and Florence (Franzoia) Cereghino. His mother passed away at an early age, and he was raised with the assistance of his maternal grandparents, Giuseppe and Luigia Franzoia. He grew up with the Italian influence of the South B St. neighborhood and spoke Italian (Genovese dialect) with his father, grandparents, and neighbors. While growing up, he worked for Luccarini at Madera Consumers, Coop., from which he shared many comical memories and lessons.
Carl attended Madera Union High School and graduated in 1947. Shortly following graduation, Carl began his career at Crocker-Anglo National Bank as a Senior Note Teller. He was a member of the Air Force National Guard, 49th Infantry Division, attending Camp Cooke and Camp San Luis Obispo. He enlisted in the US Air Force in October 1951. He was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base, Castle Air Force Base, Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming, and Okinawa Air Base as a Sergeant in Supply Management. Carl was honorably discharged, in 1954 and returned to Madera to care for his ailing grandparents. He continued his employment with Crocker-Citizens National Bank.
Carl previously met Siri Biondi through family acquaintances and continued correspondence with her while in the service. Upon his return, they continued to date and married in June 1957. They had three children.
Carl was an active member of St. Joachim’s Parish. He was also active in several organizations: Italo-American Club for over 46 years as Financial Secretary, IBS (Italian Benevolent Society) as Treasurer, St. Joachim’s Young Men’s Institute, St. Joachim’s Parent’s Club and Parish Council, Madera Historical Society, and American Cancer Society.
Carl was an avid antique collector, especially bottles, many of which were gifted to him by his cousin Irene. He proudly displayed his antiques and could recite the history and origin of each piece. He retired from Crocker Bank after 33 years as the Operations Officer in February 1980. He started a second career with Oberti Olive Company (Plant #8) in October 1980, from which he retired in 1994. In his early retirement, Carl enjoyed traveling to see his son, Geoff, gardening and projects in his yard, sketching, and picking up his grandchildren after school. In his later retirement, he continued to enjoy watching old Western TV series and movies, listening to the San Francisco Giants games commiserating about the losing games with his good friend Bud Elliott, and conversations and updates from family friend and neighbor, Adri Brown.
Carl will be deeply missed by his daughter Cari Beveridge and husband Mark, daughter Romi Parascandolo and husband Tony, and son Geoff Lin-Cereghino and wife Joan; his grandchildren Tina Selby and husband Tylan, Claire Beveridge, Patrick Beveridge, Ted Lin-Cereghino, and Grace Lin-Cereghino; and his cousin Irene Franzoia.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Siri, of 38 years.
The visitation will be from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM on Thursday, 4/29/2021, at Jay Chapel (1121 Roberts Ave. Madera) followed by recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 PM on Thursday, 4/29/2021. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church (Corner of 4th & I St. Madera) at 9:00 AM on Friday, 4/30/2021.
Remembrances may be made to St. Joachim’s School (310 North I Street, Madera, CA) or the donor’s favorite charity.
Our family wishes to thank Betty, Lila, Laura, and Martha for the loving care they provided.
